The cost of living in Dominica

Years ago people would rush to live in the Caribbean because it was a way to live better for less. Nowadays though I would say the cost of living in Dominica is close to the same as it is in England. Of course the pay and job prospects in England are a lot better but the sunshine and way of life is slower, warmer and far better in Dominica.

I asked a few people who have moved to Dominica how much I need to earn on a monthly basis to have a good life living in Dominica. This is what I discovered:

On the low side, a Diaspora returning (renting) can live on EC$3500 if you are renting a one bedroom house or small apartment.

However, I want to be able to go out often and maintain a lifestyle where I can get about and enjoy myself.

Monthly Costings as of March 2013
Rent 2,800
Groceries 2,000 (family of 3 with 2 big eating teens)
Eating out 1,000
Car rental 850
Car Insurance 45
Car tax 45
Gas/Petrol 600
Medical Insurance 400
Cable TV 80
Broadband 400 (I need that to be the best available)
Utilities 600
Misc 🙂 900

Total EC$ 9,720  which is £2,382.00 a month (USD $3,600) or  £28, 584 a year

If I took off all the expenses associated with owning a car (I don’t own one right now) and halfed the misc amount that would change the total to

Total EC$ 7,730 which is £1,894.19 or £22,728.00 a year

But then I will need money to pay for bus rides and transportation.

An alternative budget

I can reduce my costs if I stick to renting a one bedroom apartment instead of a house. I can also cut eating out down and the amount I spend on groceries if it is just me and not me and the two boys. Maybe I could keep it to $1500 a month in total for food and eating out when it is just me.

Monthly Costings as of March 2013
Rent 2,000
Groceries & eating out 1,500
Car rental 850
Car Insurance 45
Car tax 45
Gas/Petrol 600
Medical Insurance 400
Cable TV 80
Broadband 400 (I need that to be the best available)
Utilities 600
Misc 🙂 500

Total EC $7,020 or £1,720.00

PLUS If I had a small apartment AND I cut out the car I could reduce that even more but I can’t see me having much fun without a car unless I rely on the generosity of other people.

Averaging it out

As an average I am going to need £2,000 a month to be able to live and get around. That is basically what I pay here in the UK right now so I am no better off in terms of living expenses.

But living in Dominica without a car and living in a village – I am not sure how that will work. In England there is a shop around every corner (just about) and most of them are opening until 11pm at night. I am always one for running out of stuff. I guess I will have to stock up. People manage without a car in Dominica I am sure I could learn how to as well.

Compare that if you are thinking about retiring in Dominica and you can see that your pension needs to be fairly large. Plus in England we have the benefit of a free health service which will no longer be available.

Of course it is not my intention to live for a full year when I move to Dominica. I am going out for 3-6 months at a time but it still shows me that I will not be saving much money when it comes to the cost of living.
